History of the neighborhood

The old town of Salerno was formerly divided into 20 districts and you are in the Fornelle district.

The Rione, one of the oldest in the city, dating from the 9th century, includes Via Tasso, Via Portacatena, Via Fusandola, Via Spinosa and Porta di Mare. The name, according to some sources, is derived from the term Formas, that is, aqueducts where ancient mineral sources were channeled. According to others it comes from the presence of ovens used to cook ceramics as the area was inhabited by citizens of Vietri Sul Mare.

Subsequently the district took the name of Vicus Amalphitanorum since Prince Sicardo after he had conquered Amalfi between 838 and 839 made a transfer of a community of Amalfi people.

Sicardo, hoping to move the interests of the naval center to Salerno, tried to merge the two peoples through weddings, but to his death, the Amalfians, after sacking the city, returned to their homeland.

Some families who remained faithful to Salerno moved to Vietri until they were granted protection from Guaiferio to protect themselves from the Saracen incursions.

In the district, similar to a seaside village, activities related to fishing and sea traffic were carried out, such as the manufacture of boat equipment and also activities related to weaving and working of flour. As far as commerce is concerned, the Amalfi folks devoted themselves to the export of timber from Salerno inland and managed to receive privileges from the Longobard principles.
